Azospirillum brasilense is a diazotroph that associates with important agricultural crops and thus has potential to be a nitrogen biofertilizer. The A. brasilense transcription regulator NifA, which seems to be constitutively expressed, activates the transcription of nitrogen fixation genes. It has been suggested that the nitrogen status-signaling protein GlnB regulates NifA activity by direct interaction with the NifA N-terminal GAF domain, preventing the inhibitory effect of this domain under conditions of nitrogen fixation. In the present study, we show that an N-terminal truncated form of NifA no longer required GlnB for activity and lost regulation by ammonium. On the other hand, in trans co-expression of the N-terminal GAF domain inhibited the... |

Two trials were performed in Balcarce, Argentina (37° 45' LS; 58° 18' LW) during 1993-94, to assess the effect of eight herbicides applied individually or in tank mixtures, on nodule number, nodule dry weight, seed yield and N percent in seed in soybean Asgrow 3205, inoculated with Bradyrhizobium japonicum CB 1809. Individual herbicides and doses in kg ha-1 of a.i. were metribuzin (0.48), acetochlor (0.90), metolachlor (1), flumioxazin (0.075), trifluralin (0.96), imazaquin (0.20), imazethapyr (0.10) and chlorimuron ethyl (0.0125). The mixtures were metribuzin+acetochlor (0.48+0.9), flumioxazin+acetochlor (0.075+0.9), imazaquin+acetochlor (0.2+0.9), metribuzin+metolachlor (0.48+1.92), and flumioxazin+ metolachlor (0.075+1.92). A control treatment without... |

Organic matter has low N content; however, organic matter may be enriched by inoculation with selected diazotrophic bacteria. The aim of the paper was to evaluate the effects of biofertilizer produced by mixing different types and proportions of organic matter inoculated with the diazotrophic bacteria Beijerinckia indica. The experiment consisted of plastic trays (6 L) containing 5 kg of three different types of organic matter (filter mud cake, earthworm compost, and crop residue) applied in the following proportions (v:v:v): 1-(5:0:0), 2-(4:1:0), 3-(4:0:1), 4-(3:2:0), 5-(3:1:1), 6-(3:0:2), 7-(2:3:0), 8-(2:2:1), 9-(2:1:2), 10-(2:0:3), 11-(1:4:0), 12-(1:3:1), 13-(1:2:2), 14-(1:1:3), 15-(1:0:4), 16-(0:5:0), 17-(0:4:1), 18-(0:1:4), 19-(0:3:2), 20-(0:2:3), and... |

The objectives of the present study were to construct a cowpea genetic map using the F2 population resulting from the cross IC-1 x BRS Marataoã, based on single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers, and to map the cpi gene, with additional reference to introgression with the consensus map of species, aiming to identify markers for assisted selection to develop more efficient cultivars for BNF. The parents and 89 F2 plants were genotyped with 51,128 SNP markers, of which 910 polymorphic markers were used to construct the map. The results revealed 11 linkage groups, with an average of 82 markers per chromosome and average distance of 1.26 cM between markers. Recombination analysis of the SNPs indicated that markers 2_12850 and 2_00188, located in linkage... |

Lotus corniculatus, L. tenuis, L. pedunculatus, and L. subbiflorus inoculated with Mesorhizobium loti NZP2037 strain were grown in a growth chamber. The plants dry weight (DW), the nodule fresh weight (FW), the nitrogenase activity, the nodule glutamine synthetase (GS) and glutamate synthase (GOGAT) activities, as well as the leghemoglobin content and the amino acid in the stem were measured 28 days after inoculation. The highest DW of plants was measured in L. tenuis and the highest FW of nodules was measured in L. pedunculatus. Nitrogenase activity in L. tenuis, L. pedunculatus and L. subbiflorus was six fold the activity in L. corniculatus. Nodule GS and GOGAT activities did not follow this same pattern. L. tenuis had the highest values of GS and GOGAT... |

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of soil use systems from Southwest of Piaui State, Brazil, in growth and natural nodulation of tamboril [Enterolobium contortisiliquum (Vell) Morong] seedlings. The experiment was conducted in greenhouse at the Federal University of Piaui, in Bom Jesus, PI. The experiment design was completely randomized with ten replications. Treatments were consisted of four soil use systems (two areas of native forest, one grassland and one agriculture area). Seedlings were collected 85 days after planting, when height (H), collar diameter (CD), number of nodules (NN), nodule fresh matter (NFM), shoot (SDM), roots (RDM) and total dry matter (TDM), ratio of shoot and roots dry matter (SDM/TDR), Dickson quality index (DQI)... |
